SureShot Cincy provides basic pistol training courses designed for newcomers to shooting, experienced gun owners, and those who are looking for Concealed Carry training. The materials taught in SureShot Cincy courses are created by SureShot Cincy LLC, based off of the current NRA Basic Pistol Phase II training. To avoid confusion on what this means, this page will cover what the NRA Basic Pistol Certification entails vs. what is required, and our approach to teaching.
This depends on the state you are applying for carry in, and it is up to you to ensure that you have everything required for that state. In the state of Ohio, certification is required by a licensed instructor. This certification doesn’t have to be an NRA Basic Pistol course – so long as it covers proper materials and is taught by a licensed instructor, your certification is enough to qualify.
This means that certificates issued by SureShot Cincy LLC will satisfy requirements for a CCW permit in most occasions. For any other circumstance, you will need to complete the NRA Online Phase I session, below.
As of Q2, 2016, the NRA requires the following steps to be completed to acquire a NRA Basic Pistol Certification.
After Phase II training is completed, you are then given a certificate of completion.
SureShot Cincy provides what is considered Phase II training, held by a certified NRA Pistol Instructor. The course, lasting between six to eight hours, includes range time with a certified instructor and covers all of the material that would be covered in both the Phase I and Phase II courses, however, it is not an NRA-approved course unless the attendee has previously completed Phase I online training and brings proof of completion.
We do not require our students to complete NRA Phase I Online Training – upon completion of our course, you will be issued a certificate of completion from SureShot Cincy LLC. There are many reasons for this decision – an explanation from our Instructor can be found below.
At SureShot Cincy, we want to ensure that you, the student, get the best training for your time spent with us. At no point do we want to waste your time, money, or effort, and although we fully support the NRA and the training it provides, I feel that there is unnecessary redundancy and additional costs that don’t contribute to your education.
As of writing (August, 2016), the Phase I online training consists of the exact same materials that are covered in Phase II training, and lack the critical component of a present, alert instructor. Material can be interpreted in a variety of ways in print and online, and no certification is complete without an instructor present to review your skills and ensure that you are safely, correctly, and effectively handling a firearm. Improper handling, even at seemingly small details, could result in serious injury or death.
For this reason, we have chosen to teach our own course, and none of our students are required to take NRA Phase I Online Training to receive certification from SureShot Cincy LLC for application for your concealed carry permit. However, this course will fulfill the NRA Phase II requirement, so should you choose to take Phase I classes before attending our course we would be happy to sign off on Phase II completion.
Please understand that this is in no way meant to slander the National Rifle Association or their lesson plans – it is simply our belief that on a subject as important as firearms training, working without instructor guidance is unnecessary, costly, and doesn’t benefit you as a shooter.
Thank you for your understanding!
